[Photos] Teaching materials for a local school and SODIS X for day-laborers at the border

Dates: Jun 16-18, 2015
Location: Sangkhlaburi

We provided teaching materials for lessons on safe drinking water, treatments, and hygiene to a local school. They will first be used by the students in the nature club and subsequently in different classes, such as science, arts, and social study, at various grade levels.

There was a diarrheal outbreak among day-laborers at the border. Our team outlined a plan to provide them with training on drinking-water safety, treatments, and hygiene, and to make SODIS X available to those might be interested.

[Photos] Expanded training for additional change agents

Dates: May 25-27, 2015
Location: Sangkhlaburi

Another rainy season had started. We went to visit the users of SODIS X for their latest feedback. Some people said that when it rained for an extended period, they would boil water for drinking instead. This action followed the training that our team had given earlier: during an extended period of rain, SODIS could be less effective, so the users should boil water for drinking and still refrain from water that has not been disinfected.

Many staffers of development organizations from the Mon state were at Pattanarak for a month-long training on various development areas, including drinking-water safety and hygiene, and solar drying.

Also, we met with the teachers at a local school and presented to them the latest set of lessons on drinking-water safety and hygiene that we had tailored for the students. The lesson plan was finalized.

Dates: Apr 28-30, 2015
Location: Sangkhlaburi

Our team continued to gather feedback and suggestions from the users who had been participating in the SODIS X usability study. We also started a dialogue with the Viakadee community's saving group, which was one of the local businesses who could be interested in pursuing production and distribution of SODIS X products. Also, we visited Wat Wang school and discussed with the teachers the possibility of tailoring a series of lessons and teaching materials on drinking-water safety, hygiene, and water treatments, for the students. The idea was well received by the teachers and we will sketch out the specific lessons when we meet again in May. In addition to the regular lessons given to the students who visited Pattanarak's training center on school trips, these in-school lessons and teaching materials, which we hope will be continued by the schools in the future, should help broaden the long-term impacts of UpWater.
