In this day and age, it's hard to believe that about 768,000,000 people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water, isn't it? That's more than 10% of the world population!
This is a serious global health problem. Unsafe drinking water is a major cause of diarrheal diseases that kill as many as 1.8 million people per year, most of whom are young children in developing countries.
This problem, in 2011, killed about 760,000 of children under the age of five. A tragedy of that magnitude can be difficult to grasp. Imagine this: 90 school buses filled with kindergartners crash and there are no survivors. Now imagine those crashes taking place daily for one year. That is how tragic the global drinking-water problem is.
UpWater endeavors to tackle the problem.
